LCRI 2022/2023 National Wheat Farmers’ Field Day at Kura, Kano State

Lake Chad Research Institute Maiduguri has the National Mandate for the Genetic Improvement of Wheat in Nigeria. During the 2022/2023 dry season, the Institute scaled-out its activities to various states in Nigeria in its quest to open up the production frontier of wheat in the country.

The Institute operates in thirteen (13) locations in Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Taraba and Yobe States aimed opening up the wheat production frontiers and networking of stakeholders (Policy, Research, Farmers, Millers, Input Dealers) in the value chain as well as helping other private entrepreneurs establish.

The National Wheat Farmers’ Field day was organized to showcase the developed technologies by the Institute in collaboration with the partners to enhance wheat production. The 2023 edition of the event which took place 21st March 2023 at Kwandaru, in Kura Local Government – Kano State had in attendance prominent personalities from all walks of life.

The occasion was attended by the Representative of the Hon. Minister of Agriculture who is also the Zonal Director of the Ministry in-charge of North West Zone- Dr. Alao Mitchell, Director/CEO LCRI – Prof. Baba Gana Jugudum Kabir, Representative of the Executive Director IAR – Dr. Mustapha Maiyaki, Representative of the Executive Director NAERLS – Prof. Y. A. Sani, Desk Officer – Wheat FMARD Mr. Daniel Telta, The former Country Director SG 2000 – Prof. Sani Miko, Former Executive Director of LCRI– Dr. O.G. Olabanji, Former Executive Director of IAR – Prof. Ibrahim Umar Abubakar, Prof. Dattijo Aminu and Dr Abubakar Mustapha from University of Maiduguri,  Members of LCRI Internal Management Committee, Ag. President Wheat Farmers Association of Nigeria –Alh. Shehu Musa amongst other important dignitaries.

The Field day

Field days are annual events in Lake Chad Research Institute Maiduguri that bring farmers, research scientists and other stake holders’ together right in the fields and interact. The field day gives them the opportunity to know more about modern methods of agricultural production. The 2022/2023 National Farmers Field Day on Irrigated wheat as usual afforded the much needed opportunity to wheat farmers and researchers, interact, discuss and select varieties of the wheat crop that most suitable to their respective ecological conditions.
